The story of how one of the most fascinating wine-growing regions in Austria came about in existence, begins millions of years ago, the Danube has dug its winding path through solid gneisses and amphibolites. The soils from the crystalline rocks of the terraces are great for white wine cultivation.


Unmistakable wines grow on over 1,344 hectares, most on steep terraces. Some of the greatest white wines in the world with decades of development grow here, most known are Grüner Feltliner and Riesling.

Top winemakers and restaurateurs can be found at every turn in the Wachau, alongside the picturesque Danube banks, you can not go wrong stopping at any of the Restaurants and the GastHauses along the road, some of them offering dining tables on terraces straight in their own vineyards and others offering stunning views of the river.
