The short story Dagon written by H. P. Lovecraft was his fourth short story (in the order I'm reading them in). It is his first story where a person is truly and utterly alone, faced with an aquatic horror world. I find this interesting because, in my mind, this world is really quite mild and comforting :).
There are a LOT of spoilers in my discussion, so be sure to read Dagon first!
