SHIREBROOK: Bolsover Parish #8 of 16

Описание: Bolsover is a former mining area, it's lined with colliery history from the North to the South. In fact, you'd be hard pushed to find a parish within it that doesn't have some kind of mining heritage. It's that kind of place. It was built on coal. Perhaps no surprise then that it a short space of time, this town sprung up after the discovery of coal, so much so that it quickly outstripped it's neighbour Pleasley in terms of population.

It had a Model Village in no time flat, and with it came the work of George Widdows -- a well known school designer who came up with fabulous educational buildings that have stood the tes of time. The Model Village Primary School is one fine example in this village of his work. You won't be hard pushed to find other former pit buildings as well like the old miners welfare, which has a very successful band these days.

Whilst the former colliery site has been transformed into the amazing Brook park, it's still an industrial area, owned by Sports Direct for the most part, but billionaire owner Mike Ashley would co9me under fire for the working conditions in the "gulag" as it was referred to in recent times. That said, it is still an impressive development of four massive warehouses for the retailer, totalling 111,000 square metres.

We finish this one off in the cemetery, way out of town, and by far the most peaceful spot in a market town that despite going through a period of decline thanks to the colliery's demise, still thrives and bustles with almost the same energy as ever. These days though, it's more directed towards a different industry - retail.
