A chiral carbon is attached to four different substituents. The molecule is said to be chiral when it has a chiral carbon and is optically active.
An optically active molecule can rotate the plane of polarised light. We can figure out a molecule is optically active:
1. Figuring out if it has a chiral carbon
2. Drawing its structure to figure out if the mirror image is non-superimposable.
