I wrote this song about a week before the U.S. election. It was weird because I didn’t know why I had the first lines from “When the Saints Go Marching In”. It came out when I started playing my guitar. So I went with it.
After the election I understood more clearly what the song is really about. It’s not a political song or one of rebellion. I would say it’s a different take. It’s allegorical in many ways because it has nothing to do with saints. Rather, it’s saints as a metaphor. And the metaphor is open to interpretation.
The U.S.A is in motion to go through many changes in the next several years. Some of those changes will no doubt be felt around the world. Some may not be welcomed. I do have strong views about all that went down, and will most likely go down, but that’s not for this song.
Lyrics/
Oh when the saints came marching in
All around the world did spin
The stars they shined in the sky
On you and I
Cause we are one, or don’t you know
It’s always been, or so it goes
It’s in the song that we will sing
With everyone
And everything.
And when the saints have fallen down
I look to you to be around
In quiet times and some not so
We’ll see a time
When they will go
And though the winds are growing strong
The Winter storms will come along
In Spring will shine
It’s written so
For all of us
So we may know.
Yes, all the saints, they’ve gone away
Where they’ve gone, I could not say
And so it is, we’re on our own
But I don’t feel too all alone
Cause we are one, or don’t you know
The stars still shine, the moon it glows
And you and I, still move along
We step in time
We sing the song
We sing the song
