Two bear encounters on our favorite hiking trail in Yellowstone National Park

The Slough Creek trail is one of my family's favorite hikes in Yellowstone National Park. This hike is moderate to long depending on if you want to hike it as a day hike or stay in the backcountry in an overnighter. There is an abundance of wildlife on this trail, including grizzlies, wolves, black bears, bison, and sand hill cranes. Slough Creek follows this trail and is world famous for its fly fishing.

June through September is the best season to hike Slough Creek. Out and back hiking this trail is up to over 20 miles to Silver Tip Ranch which is a working ranch at the end of this wagon trail. Because Slough Creek trail is a working wagon trail, you make come across a horse drawn wagon or two. If you meet a wagon, please step off to the side of the trail quietly and wait for them to pass by. This trail is heavily used by wagons and horses. In the rain or after a storm, it does get muddy and there are ruts you may have to walk around.

At the trailhead there is a steep incline for the first 3/4 of a mile and then the trail levels out pretty much for the remainder of the trail with only 400 ft. in elevation gain over 11 miles. Enjoy the rolling hills of this absolutely beautiful trail.

Slough Creek is a hike that you must do! Be prepared for any type of weather from sunny and hot to freezing cold rain with lightning and thunder. Make sure to bring the appropriate gear (poncho or rain coat), waterproof footwear and a wide brimmed hat to keep the sun off and to stay cool.

Be bear aware, have your bear spray ready and know how to use it.
