With Mario Tennis Fever, developer Camelot hones in on the technical aspects of tennis, especially shot types. Topspins, slices, flats, and lobs have a sort of rock-paper-scissors thing going on where they can each serve as the appropriate answer to the others given the circumstance. Is the other player getting aggressive with charged-up Topspins that keep you off-center and pushed back? Hit them with a slice to buy yourself an extra moment to reposition and slow the tempo. Are they hovering around the back of the court and being conservative? A well-placed drop shot can catch them off guard.

Learning these shot types and when you should use them is more satisfying than ever. Physically darting around the court and reacting to your opponents strategy with tactics of your own is thrilling, and in true tennis fashion, matches against two skilled players become a true mind game.

I got a sense for just how high the skill ceiling in Mario Tennis Aces is the first time I fired up Ranked matchmaking. I got taken to the woodshed by another player that had a clear and well-executed strategy, while I found myself sprinting back and forth across the court just chasing balls. I was playing their game, not mine. Having poise, knowing when to use your shot types, and punishing your opponents mistakes are the keys to victory.
