Animals that live in the open ocean can be challenging to find and observe. As video cameras have become smaller and batteries and data storage have become more efficient, animal-borne video cameras have given scientists new insight into the behavior of animals foraging in the marine environment. In this episode, we will hear from researchers using video to get a firsthand look at animal behavior, corroborating data collected from GPS trackers, depth sensors, and other devices. A cheek-mounted camera allowed scientists to observe how elephant seals use their whiskers to search for prey in the dark depths of the ocean. Researchers used video recorders to explore how the size of prey affects the foraging strategies of northern fur seals. Video cameras can allow scientists to estimate the energy gained and expended by foraging animals, including sailfish and humpback whales. A device that automatically detects rare behaviors and triggers video recordings provided insight into the activities of streaked shearwaters. Information about the foraging behavior of marine animals collected from animal-borne video cameras can provide a baseline for how these animals may be affected by future disturbances, including climate change.
