Exploring the Lead Mines and Round Loaf a late-Neolithic or Bronze Age tumulus at Rivington

Описание: In todays mini adventure we go to explore the Lead Mine Clough at Rivington and then continue on to the summit of Round Loaf, standing at 330m ASL this small pimple like hill emerges out of the boggy peat moorland and doesn't appear to belong in this area.

"Lead Mines Clough is located around a mineral vein that has infilled along a geological fault line. The area was mined extensively in the past and there are obvious bell pits on the higher ground and an excellent example of later mine workings that was restored by volunteers.

The brook flowing through the area has several waterfalls and has exposed quite large areas of rock bedding that gives the area a different look to its surroundings, that is carried further by the pine tree plantations that are still in place. Many such plantations having been removed and re-planted with native trees."

"Round Loaf is a late-Neolithic or Bronze Age tumulus on Anglezarke Moor in the West Pennine Moors near Chorley in Lancashire, England. The bowl barrow is a scheduled monument considered to be of national importance. It was first scheduled in March 1954.[1] The structure is aligned between Great Hill and Pikestones.

Round Loaf is one of 10,000 bowl barrows constructed between the late-Neolithic period and the late-Bronze Age (2400 - 1500 BC). They are funerary monuments in the form of earth or rubble mounds covering single or multiple burials. Some were surrounded by a ditch. Some are in isolated locations as is Round Loaf and some are grouped in cemeteries. They vary in size and regional variations show a range of different burial practices."
