Zubeen Garg was born on 18 November 1972, in Tura, Meghalaya.

Parents:

Father: Mohini Mohon Borthakur — a magistrate by profession, and also a poet/lyricist under the pen name Kapil Thakur.
Mother: Ily Borthakur — a singer, who was his first teacher in music.
He was named Zubeen after the famous conductor Zubin Mehta. His original name was Zubeen Borthakur, but he later adopted “Garg” as his surname (the Brahmin gotra) instead of using his parental surname.
Musical Beginnings & Training
He started singing very young — around age 3.
His first guru was his mother.
He trained in tabla with Pandit Robin Banerjee for about 11 years.
He also learned Assamese folk music under Guru Ramani Rai.
