6. EUROPEAN GREEN CRAB
The European green crab proves that a single species can have detrimental effects on one area’s ecosystem while on the flip side, helping another. A new study aims to prove that the impacts of invasive species are not always straightforward.
5. ASIAN CARP
In recent decades, seven species of carp that are native to Asia have been introduced into the United States in recent decades. Ecologists, biologists, fishermen, and policymakers are worried mostly about four particular species - bighead, black, grass, and silver. They were originally introduced in the southeast to help control weeds and parasites in aquaculture operations.
4. ZEBRA MUSSELS
Zebra mussels are one of the most prolific invasive species since the nineteenth century, having established a presence in Great Britain, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Italy, California, and the U.S. Great Lakes. The long-distance spread of zebra mussels from their native eastern Europe is thought to be caused by ballast water discharge from transoceanic ships. They are also spread between countries by the short-distance movement of recreational boats, and can survive between three and five days out of water.
3. CANE TOADS
During the 1930’s, Australian farmers became desperate as beetles began devouring sugar cane fields in Queensland. They considered pesticides as a last resort and explored other options, leading to rumors of a toad that loved to dine on cane beetles. It was thought that a few hundred cane toads, which grow as large as dinner plates and weigh up to four-and-a-half pounds, could get the infestation under control.
2. EUROPEAN STARLING
There are over 200 million European starlings on the North American continent, and they can be found as far south as Mexico and as far north as Alaska. Their presence can be blamed primarily on a pharmaceutical manufacturer named Eugene Schieffelin, who imported sixty of them on March 6, 1980.
1. WHITE SPOTTED JELLYFISH
White-spotted jellyfish, also known as Australian spotted jellyfish, are native to the warm, tropical waters of the Pacific Ocean, from Oceania to East Asia, and they seem relatively harmless at the outset. Their venom is mild, non-threatening to humans, and generally not used for capturing prey. Like oysters or sponges, white jellies are filter feeders, and their main food source is microscopic plankton. In one day, each jellyfish can clear 50 cubic meters of plankton-filled water.
