An old tradition which involves singing, dancing around the trees, much shouting of 'Huzzah' & ‘Wassail’ and toasting the trees with cider & actual pieces of toast!
The purpose of wassailing is to celebrate and bless the trees, to awaken them from their winter slumber, to help produce a good harvest for the coming year. Cider from the previous year's harvest is used in the ceremony.
