What you'll need:
Oil Filter
Oil - Appropriate amount and type for your engine (use Repco rego search to help you find the right oil for your car
Socket set - To remove the sump plug
Oil Filter Wrench - To remove the old oil filter
Oil Pan - To catch the old oil
Funnel - To avoid any spillage
Jack and Axle Stands - to lift your car high enough to get underneath
Repco Top Tip: Warm up the engine for 2-3 mins to make the oil more viscous allowing it to flow easily. We also recommend an engine oil flush additive, this helps to break away any carbon build up in the engine that has occurred over time
Step 1: Locate and loosen the Sump Plug
Step 2: Lift up the oil pan as you remove the sump plug
Step 3: Drain the oil completely, leave it for 5-10 mins till it stops dripping
Step 4: Replace and tighten the sump plug
Step 5: Remove the old oil filter - Keep it upright as you remove the filter so it doesn't spill out
Step 6: Prepare the new oil filter by putting some engine oil around the rubber seal, this prevents the seal from buckling or twisting when you wind it back on.
Step 7: Check and clean the oil filter area for any grit, old oil filter seals or other contaminants and clean
Step 8: Wind your filter back on as per your vehicle specifications
Step 9: Begin to pour your oil into the engine - make sure you check in your owners manual as to how much oil your engine should take, you don't want to over-fill the engine capacity
Step 10: Replace the oil cap
Step 11: Check oil indicator on the dash and start your engine, if it doesn't go off in 20 seconds then shut the engine off
Step 12: Check under the car for any oil leaks
Step 13: Lower the car back onto the ground and check your engine oil level
To keep your engine running at its prime - oil and oil filters should be replaced every 6-9 months, or 8 - 15,000kms. Check your owner manual to see what the correct interval is for you.
With the right tools, it's definitely a job you can do yourself.
