Established in nineteen fourteen, the Federal Trade Commission, or FTC, protects American consumers in every state from fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices under the Federal Trade Commission Act, or FTCA. The FTC investigated a popular mobile app for violations of the FTCA in the twenty fourteen case In the Matter of Snapchat.

The mobile app Snapchat allows users to exchange temporary video and photo messages called snaps. In twenty fourteen, the FTC investigated Snapchat for deceiving consumers in violation of the FTCA. According to the FTC complaint that followed, Snapchat assured its users that their snaps would disappear for good after a certain amount of time. But in reality, there were a number of ways for recipients to save the snaps. The complaint further alleged that Snapchat tracked the geolocation information of Android users, contradicting the wording of its privacy policy.

Without admitting any wrongdoing, Snapchat agreed to settle with the FTC.
