On August 31, 2014 almost two hundred private pictures of various celebrities, mostly females and many with nudity, were posted on anon-ib, 4chan, reddit, and tumblr, marking the beginning of the 2014 celebrity pictures leak (also known as "The Fappening" or "Celebgate", and the "Fapocalypse", as in I survived the "Fapocalypse"). They were allegedly taken through an exploit of iCloud, to which iPhone photos can be automatically synced. The photographs were allegedly sold for bitcoin. According to Apple, the photos were not stolen through any breach in iCloud or Find My iPhone; rather, they were the result of targeted attacks on celebrity usernames and passwords.

Victims of the exploit were alleged to include Jennifer Lawrence, Jenny McCarthy, Rihanna, Kate Upton, Mary Elizabeth Winstead,Kirsten Dunst, Ariana Grande, and Victoria Justice.Lawrence and Winstead confirmed the authenticity of the photos, while Grande and Justice denied the photos were of them.
