Mr. John Ahmadu explains how the Kam (Nyingwom) people build their houses. This video was captured by Gambo Musa and David Mamuda.
Kam is a Nigerian language spoken by the Kam people in Bali Local Government Area, in Taraba State, Central-eastern Nigeria. Speakers call themselves Nyí ngwɔ̀m and their language and culture àngwɔ̀m. There are an estimated 8,000-11,000 speakers of the language.
This video is part of the Kam Documentation Project, led by Jakob Lesage. The aim of the project is to document and preserve for posterity and for the global community the Kam language and the valuable knowledge that is embedded in it. The project is funded by the Endangered Language Documentation Project (ELDP) and hosted by the Humboldt University in Berlin.
We started this project in the COVID-19 pandemic. All of the documentation presented here will be collected by speakers and annotated in close collaboration between the depositor and the community. The documentation process is adapted to the lifestyle and time schedule of the community and the consultants, and is independent of the physical presence of a researcher. This opens up a wide range of social situations and daily activities that can be recorded in their natural setting.
The Kam Documentation Team has the following members in and around the Kam community:
Solomon Ahmadu (filming, transcription and translation)
Bitrus Andrew (computer teacher, technical support and project management)
Babangida Audu (filming, transcription, translation and project management)
David Mamuda (filming, transcription and translation)
Gambo Musa (filming, interviewing, transcription and translation)
Safiya Hamidu (filming and interviewing)
Lazarus Bako (filming and project management)
Rahab Precious Garba (transcription and translation)
Elisha Yunana (documentation teacher and support)
Danjuma Bello (filming and interviewing)
We are grateful for the support of Christopher Denis, Mirjam Möller, Abraham Ibiem Msugh, Isa Sarkin Dawa and everyone in the Kam community who contributed to this project in any way.
