Richard arrived at 9:47 a.m. I remember the exact time because the grandfather clock in the hall—Tom’s pride, wound every Sunday for forty-three years—had just finished striking. Lauren stayed in the car at first, engine running, as if she couldn’t bear to step inside what used to be our home.
Richard didn’t hug me. He stood in the doorway holding a manila folder thick enough to bruise. “Mom,” he said, the word flat, “we’ve got the paperwork. Dr. Ramirez signed off. It’s for your safety.”
