Legong Kupu-Kupu Tarum is one of the classical Balinese Legong pieces that emerged in the 1930s from the village of Bedulu, Bali, Indonesia. It tells a delicate story of transformation and the fleeting beauty of a butterfly’s life. The name 'Kupu-kupu Tarum' refers to butterflies that dwell among Tarum plants (Indigofera tinctoria), a source of natural indigo dye, a rare color in nature.
Like many Legong dances, Legong Kupu-Kupu Tarum is composed of three parts:
🔹 Pepeson (00:32 - 03:33) — the opening, where the cocoon begins its transformation
🔹 Pengawak (03:34 - 07:15) — the heart of the dance, capturing the butterfly’s flight and moments of communion with others
🔹 Pekaad (07:16 - 13:04) — the closing, as the butterfly returns gracefully to earth
This video accompanies a zine titled 'Dance of The Butterflies' by artist Phantasien / Anindya Anugrah, inspired by this dance and its symbolism. Performed by herself together with her teacher and Legong dancer, Ni Ketut Putri Minangsari. (instagram.com/poetryreading)
