VinFast VF8 & VF9 - The Truth No One Will Tell You (First Look & Deep Dive Review)

Описание: VinFast hit the market here in the United States a couple years ago with quite the fanfare and accolades of prominent journalists and periodicals. Given the glowing reviews from big names and publications, I was surprised at what I found when I drive and explored both the VF8 and VF9 for myself.

The VinFast brand is relatively new here in the United States and currently only sells in California. While VinFast clearly has ambitious plans, including a massive assembly and production facility in North Carolina, upon closer look, I argue there is quite a bit of work to do.

VinFast originally arrived to the U.S. with limited range options, with EPA rating under 200 miles. In these days, EPA rating under 200 is nearly unheard of, with few exceptions. That said, the options that do come in with limited range like this, come at a significantly lower price than VinFast and from household names like Nissan.

This newcomer is actually pricing their new arrivals more than the most popular brands, including Tesla. So when you are asking for a premium over a Tesla, you better be bringing a lot to the table. Unfortunately for VinFast, that premium price tag does not come with a premium vehicle experience.

VinFast has their VF8, similar in size to a Model Y, priced several thousand more than the most popular EV in the world. On top of that, the Tesla Model Y qualifies for a $7,500 EV Tax credit, where the VinFast does not. The VF9 is the same story, price several thousand more than a Tesla Model X, although the VF9 does come standard with 7 passenger interior.

The VinFast VF8 comes in north of $46k, and range tops out at 264 miles EPA. The range and lower end interior materials are not necessarily a problem, until you get to that price tag, which is more than a Tesla Model Y, and more than many other EV's in this category. Stepping up to the VF9, the price tag soars to $83k, but at least it gives you 330 respectable EPA rated miles of range. Still, this comes with the same interior materials that lack a luxury feel you would expect in a car that comes in north of $80k.

This is really the big issue with VinFast. There is a major disconnect between what the company seems to think is appropriate pricing for their cars and what consumers here in the U.S. expect at these price ranges. The fit and finish, less than luxurious materials and lack of brand recognition or supporting service infrastructure can all be overlooked, but at the right price.

If the VF8 was priced in the $30's, and the VF9 in the $50's, these would be great options to consider. However, they are priced significantly higher than these figures, and for this reason, I am not confident VinFast will be here to stay, unless there is a big shift in price or product.
