Join me as I explore the historic Matilda Hill near Nana Glen on the Coffs Coast of Australia! Today, I'm venturing into the bush to metal detect around the remnants of old quartz reef gold mines, including the Lady Matilda, Jubilee, and West Jubilee Mines. Gold was first reported in the Nana Glen area way back in 1881, and Matilda Hill is named after Matilda Sharp, the daughter of the area's first settlers.
Despite the recent wet weather, the sunshine is out, and I'm making the most of it to uncover some history. I'll be navigating old forestry tracks and mountain bike trails to reach the mine sites, where quartz litters the ground. Watch as I swing my metal detector around mullock heaps and near old mine shafts and adits, hoping to find relics from the gold rush era.
You'll see the challenges of detecting in dense bush with my 6-inch coil, and the excitement of getting those first signals! Follow along as I dig up old rusty nails, and then discover some truly interesting finds: a broken pickaxe piece and a fantastic old button from A. Hordern and Sons, a significant Sydney department store that was once the largest in the world!
Plus, there are a few encounters with the local wildlife, including a brown snake and some persistent leeches! It's a day of exploration, history, and a little bit of bush survival.
Thanks for watching! Don't forget to like, subscribe, and hit the bell icon for more metal detecting adventures and historical explorations on the Coffs Coast and beyond!
