Join us at the National Jazz Museum on Thursday, Oct. 9th from 2:00pm-5:00pm for a special iteration of the Jazz Foundation of America afternoon concert series. Come celebrate the 100th livestream special with a legendary lineup of Harlem musicians! It’s a concert you won’t want to miss.

2:00pm – Bill Saxton and the Harlem All-Stars

Bill Saxton was born in Harlem, attended NYC public schools, and began his music career in the late 1960s. After graduating from The New England Conservatory of Music, he went on to appear with and/or record with jazz giants such as Roy Haynes, Jackie McLean, Clark Terry, Nancy Wilson, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, The Count Basie Orchestra, Frank Foster, Carmen McRae, Mongo Santamaria, Roy Ayers, Barry Harris, Tito Puente, and Charles Tolliver. He has also established himself as a bandleader of world class musicians for over forty years, being joined by Bobby Watson, Hilton Ruiz, Bobby Forester and John Hicks. Saxton toured extensively with the US State Department in West Africa, and went on to play across Europe, Japan and the Caribbean. He has been recognized as a Harlem jazz legend by the White House, the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, and the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. In 2006, Saxton opened Bill’s Place, a historical jazz landmark on West 133rd St and 7th Ave, where he honors the purist legacy of serious straight-ahead jazz.

3:30pm – Patience Higgins Quartet

Patience Higgins is a multi-reed player who has been a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra for over twenty years. He has played at the White House in front of the Obamas and also toured and recorded with Frank Foster and Count Basie Orchestra, Savion Glover, Aretha Franklin, Lionel Hampton, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Scott, Wallace Roney, Sam Rivers, Hamiet Bluiett and many others. He’s played in Broadway shows like Avenue Q, Dreamgirls, The Wiz, Ain’t MisBehavin’, Bubbling Brown Sugar, Black & Blue, Runaways, and Hair. His Sugar Hill Quartet was the longest running band at the legendary St Nick’s Pub, and he remains ubiquitous at uptown venues.
