Staking young trees is an important step in giving the newly planted tree the best start. Small trees need to be staked when they are first planted to help develop a strong root system, especially if they have a weeping habit such as Gumbi Gumbi plants. This method of staking provides support for the growing plant while allowing enough movement for it to get the message to grow strong roots, but not too much movement that would prevent roots from getting a hold in the soil.
In this video, Karen describes how she staked this young eucalypt tree. The wooden stakes were hammered in just outside each side of the root ball with the angle of the stakes pointing slightly outwards. The plant ties will place inwards pressure on the stakes when attached. Karen shows us the 2 x soft fabric plant ties. Each strip ties the stake to the trunk of the tree crossing over in the centre to form a figure 8 shape, which is the crucial fastening method to allow the right amount of movement.
