STORYLINE:
Thousands of people threw colored powders at each other in the northern Indian town of Barsana on Thursday to celebrate the Holi festival in traditional style.
Covered in bright colors, people from around the country danced to the beats of dhol - an Indian percussion instrument - as colored powder filled the air.
Holi, which marks the advent of spring in India, is celebrated with sticks and shields in Barsana, the birthplace of Hindu god Krishna's beloved, Radha.
In a traditional ritual, men from Nandgaon, the land of Krishna, come to play Holi with women of Barsana and are greeted with bamboo sticks.
The men carry shields to protect themselves in the mock battle.
Though Holi is celebrated on a particular date - 24 March this year - in villages around Barsana, it is a weeklong affair.
