Ok so it's Christmas and your car has died and you need another one in a hurry but cash is tight.
We were tasked with finding a sub £500 car quickly and after searching various online ads found this 2004 Vectra 1.8 LS with MoT until August for just £350. Not only does the car need to be cheap, it needs to run for at least a couple of months "as is".
We reckon we did alright with this Vectra; a private sale, the previous owner had the car for many years and had it maintained regularly. Two keys, no warning lights on the dash, V5 present, a quick test drive identified only a thermostat required immediately. Sorted - it had only been advertised for a few hours when we moved fast and bought it, genuine cars aren't around for long. We didn't specifically set out to buy a Vectra C it could easily have been a Mk4/5 Astra or Corsa C.
Vectra C 1.8s are ideal for bargain motoring as they're fairly simple under the bonnet, all service parts are as cheap as they come and they're common in scrap yards too.
The video runs through a series of tips on what to look for if you're needing a super cheap car. Yes there are sometimes amazing bargains to be had out there like our Vectra B CDX which was bought for £450 but these only come up rarely.
When you need a car quickly and with Coronavirus lockdowns in place you have to work with what's around you. This Vectra should have a good couple of years reliable service left in it yet and will prove much cheaper to run than the previous car, an Mot-expired turbo diesel Toyota Corolla which was in need of over £1500 of work to make road worthy again.
