The hymn tune Surrey comes from English poet, composer and playwright Henry Carey, who lived during the 18th century. Information suggests he may have been a bastard son of the first Marquess of Halifax, although his lineage is unclear.
Perhaps more notably, Carey was known for his political satire which flowed through several of his earlier dramas, before he turned to musical burlesques and satirical operas. Despite this cynical view of life, Carey is alleged to be the composer and lyricist behind 'God save the King'.
In the shadow of this varied and interesting background, I hope you enjoy this beautiful hymn, accentuated by the magnificent reharmonisation by Noel Rawsthorne.
