A significant hoarding case occurred in Bengaluru, Karnataka, where 387 LPG cylinders were reportedly seized from an unauthorized location amidst widespread complaints of artificial scarcity, with allegations that a minister intervened to protect the offenders.
According to reports, the incident is linked to a broader crackdown on illegal LPG hoarding by the Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Department and local police during mid-to-late March 2026.
Key details surrounding the controversy include:
The Seizure & Alleged Interference: Reports indicate that after a massive stash of domestic LPG cylinders was discovered at a godown, a Minister allegedly called the official in charge, asking to let the culprits go, sparking accusations of political protection of black marketers.
Controversy Over Minister's Role: The incident brought scrutiny to Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Minister K.H. Muniyappa. A purposed video indicated that a food department official acknowledged instructions from "the minister" to halt the raid, raising concerns about a nexus between officials and the gas agency.
Artificial Scarcity Allegations: Residents in areas like Yelahanka reported being denied cylinders for weeks, citing "no stock," while thousands of cylinders were found stored in warehouses.
Widespread Crackdown: The Food and Civil Supplies Department registered several cases under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for illegal hoarding and selling domestic cylinders at inflated prices, including:
209 cylinders in Chikkajala.
45 cylinders in Peenya, Bengaluru.
15 cylinders in Kengeri.
Government Stance: Despite the allegations of shielding, the Karnataka government, including Home Minister G. Parameshwara, initially instructed police to crack down on hoarders during the LPG shortage caused by supply issues from West Asia.
This, among other seizures totaling hundreds of cylinders across the state, highlighted a severe supply crunch in Bengaluru, prompting allegations of artificial shortages created by a network of distributors and political figures.
