More than a century after piped water first began flowing into homes here in 1906, Indore is once again in the headlines, this time over contaminated water that has reportedly claimed nine lives. Ironically, the very pipeline network that once symbolised modern civic vision is now being linked to a serious public health emergency in the Madhya Pradesh city.
Reliable historical records indicate that organised water supply and electricity were introduced under Maharaja Tukojirao Holkar III, when the city was still a princely state under British rule. The Holkar rulers funded and developed much of the city’s early infrastructure, including the pipeline network and sanitation systems. In fact, several of those pipelines, particularly in the old quarters, date back 80-100 years and are still in use today.
