Sakai City in Osaka is the second largest city in Osaka.
It has flourished as a commercial town since ancient times, and the old townscape still remains today.
Sakai was also famous for the production of kitchen knives, and there were many cutlery shops.
I also want to buy a kitchen knife for a lifetime here someday.
Most of Sakai City suffered war damage, but the town near the Yamato River in the north escaped burning. The old townscape remains in the area of Kitahatago-cho where the old Kishu Kaido passes. Rows of townhouses with low eaves and tiled roofs line the relatively narrow road to the west of the Kishu Highway. Sakai was once the largest producer of guns in Japan, and the gunsmith's residence of the Inoue family has been designated as a city-designated tangible cultural property. The techniques of Sakai guns have been handed down continuously over the centuries, turning into bicycles and Japanese kitchen knives, and are still being used today.
