The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) 5G portfolio of programs focuses on 5G security and open source. The goal is to create open source software and systems enabling secure 5G and subsequent mobile networks. As most DARPA programs have a relatively short lifetime (e.g., three to four years), it became clear very early on that green field development was not the optimal solution in terms of speed and efficiency; and widespread adoption by the community was not guaranteed. In order to help ensure that the 5G portfolio objectives were achieved, DARPA partnered with the Linux Foundation (LF) to leverage the LF’s extensive ongoing investments and well-established processes to enable long-term evolution and sustainment of open source projects. In turn, the DARPA 5G portfolio of programs is actively engaging in open source at the LF in a variety of projects including the 5G Super Blueprint, Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP), Open Daylight, ONAP Enterprise Task Force, and Edge Multi-Cluster Orchestrator.
