Giant Steps was first composed and played by John Coltrane on tenor saxophone in 1960. This is an original improvisation played by pianist Evan Chow on October 24, 2011.
Part of a studio album by the same name, Giant Steps was Coltrane's farewell to bebop and highly influential in the advent of modern jazz improvisation. For performers, this piece was a milestone in daring them to improvise over a gauntlet of key changes in major thirds producing an augmented triad.
