""The Tarahumara People" (a.k.a.: "The Rarámuri People"), are a tribe of Indigenous people of Central America, living in the state of Chihuahua, in Mexico. They are renowned for their long-distance running ability. Originally, inhabitants of much of Chihuahua, the Tarahumara People retreated to the high sierras and canyons, such as the Copper Canyon in the Sierra Madre Occidental, until, the arrival of Spanish colonizers, in the 16th century. The area of the Sierra Madre Occidental, which they now inhabit is often called the "Sierra Tarahumara", because, of their presence. Staple crops are corn and beans, however, many of the people still raise cattle, sheep and goats. Most still practise a traditional lifestyle, including inhabiting natural shelters (caves or, cliff overhangs). The Tarahumara/Rarámuri language belongs to the Uto-Aztecan family. Although, it is in decline,under pressure from Spanish, it is still widely spoken. In the Rarámuri/Tarahumara language, the endonymic term "rarámuri" refers specifically to the men, while women are referred to as "mukí" (individually) and as "omugí" or, "igómale" (collectively). The Rarámuri People are believed to be descended from a People of the Mogollon culture. They repulsed and were never conquered by the Spanish conquistadors or, fully converted, by the Jesuit missionaries.

The Tarahumara Peoples' word for themselves, "Rarámuri" means: "runners on foot", or, "those who run fast". With widely dispersed settlements, theTarahumara People developed a tradition of long-distance running, up to "200 miles (320 km) in one session, over a period of two days", through their homeland of rough canyon country, for inter-village communication, transportation and hunting. Their use of huaraches, a traditional form of minimal footwear, when running has been the subject of scientific study, as well as journalistic discourse. In 1927, a historic race was held from Bocoyna to Minaca and back, 110 miles on “exceedingly rough” trails over the mountains. This created great interest among the Tarahumara People and at a council of members of the tribe, two of the fastest runners with great endurance were selected to race. On the day of this historic mountain trail ultramarathon, the two Tarahumara runners set off, running through the rugged mountains. The Tarahumara winner covered the 110 miles in 16 hours, still looking fresh, at the finish.
