Many people feel that classics can’t be improved upon, or at least shouldn’t be meddled with. But in my own opinion, basic beer is boring, and I love traveling to new places that surprise and challenge my taste buds. If you’re tired of going brewery-hopping but feeling like you’re just drinking the same old lagers, wheat beers and IPAs in different places with different names, then I know just the place for you. Bruery Terreux is a boutique craft brewery located in Orange County, California, that specializes in farmhouse-style wild and sour ales.

“Bruery Terreux” was created by Master Cicerone Patrick Rue and loosely translates from French to “Earthy Bruery.” Their beers are fermented using “wild yeast” which gives them a unique and rustic character. They use a wide variety of yeasts from varying sources, which allows for endless combinations and opportunities for creativity. Some of their beers are wholly fermented with a singular yeast strain and others are co-fermented, resulting in dry, funky and fruity notes. Fermented and aged in oak barrels with wild yeast and bacteria, these tart and funky beers put a unique California twist on historic countryside brewing techniques.

The brewery’s fantastic tap selection includes a wide array of sour and funky Bruery Terreux creations, as well as familiar classics and new offerings from The Bruery. Although they specialize in wild and sour ales, there are solid options for those with different taste, such as the Relax IPA and the Retreat Double IPA from Rue’s latest project, Offshoot Beer Company, which specializes in hoppy beers.

We drank so many delicious beers that it was hard to pick a favorite, but the most exciting one for me was the Freeze Bruesicle OG, a smoothie style sour ale with orange, guava, vanilla and lactose. I’ve never had a sour ale as a frozen smoothie before, and it’s a really unique way to enjoy a beer! The Frucht series includes an exciting variety of oak foeder aged tarts in bright flavors like passion fruit, grapefruit and guava. If you like Flanders styles then don’t miss their Gypsy Tart Flanders brown and the Oude Tart Flanders red, which is barrel-aged for over 18 months.

If you prefer sweets over sours, then try some beers by The Bruery, like Bakery Coconut Macaroons, a 13% ABV pastry stout with toasted coconut and vanilla and Hold the Spoon, a blonde ale with cacao, peanut flour, salt and lactose. If you want to get lit, The Bruery’s heavy-hitting and delicious bourbon barrel-aged options pack a punch, coming in at ABVs of 13 to 14 percent on average.

With a gorgeous atmosphere, plenty of comfortable seating, and a large outdoor patio to enjoy the beautiful Southern California weather, Bruery Terreux is the perfect place to meet up with friends and share some mouthwatering beers. It’s always fun to order a bunch of tasting flights to share and discuss. Thanks to how unique and experimental the beers here are, you’ll definitely have a lot to talk about.
