Hi, I'm Dr. Venkatesh Ashkumar, Consultant Nephrologist at Apollo Hospital, Chennai. Today I'm going to talk about an important topic in Nephrology, is kidney biopsy. By biopsy, we put a small needle into the kidney, take a small piece from it and see under the microscope to find out a lot of information about the kidney related issues. So, the most important thing about biopsy is that the moment you talk about biopsy, the first concern in the patient's mind is that, are we dealing with cancer? I can straight away allay that fear, saying it is anything but cancer. In kidneys, we do not do a biopsy to find out cancer. Rather, we do a biopsy to find out the reason for kidney problem. So there are few indications for a biopsy. The most common indication being proteins in the urine. Normally, we do not have proteins in the urine. When somebody has protein in the urine beyond the expected normal for his age and race and other things, we generally do a biopsy to find out the reason so that we can treat it properly and cure it. Also, when somebody has got a renal failure, by which I mean a deranged renal functions for which the reason is not clear. unexpected renal failure that is the second most common indication for a kidney biopsy. It's a typically a daycare procedure. is not a surgery. You are going to need only a local anesthesia meaning there is not going to be any cut or anything. We're going to give small anesthesia in the back of your body, in the lower part of the abdomen. And you're going to do an ultrasound. Under ultrasound guidance, you're going to pass a needle, take a small piece from the kidney, one or two bits as per need and see it under the microscope. That is going to give you a lot of information about the nature of the kidney problem, the duration of the kidney and what could be the potential treatment options available. By doing a biopsy, we can get all this information and treat kidney related ailments in a proper way that we can cure a lot of them. Thank you.
