Shut up Miller, you're not the Big Boss of me.
What's that? You weren't expecting a video like this from me? Would you say that it... snuck up on you?
MGS: Ground Zeroes is published by Konami, and is available on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
Footage is from RWBY, 24, and Total Recall. Audio is from Xenoblade Chronicles, Rain Man, Unreal Tournament, and Metal Gear Solid.
I started working on this video shortly before it was announced that Monty Oum had been hospitalized, and finished it shortly after his death. Fans of his and fans of Rooster Teeth at large were asked to do something creative to remember him. Unfortunately, I'm too busy with college to do anything truly creative and this dumb video I was already working on had to suffice. This isn't nearly worthy of being some form of 'tribute' to Monty Oum.
For those unfamiliar, Monty Oum was an animator who first gained notice back in 2007 for his short animated films Haloid and Dead Fantasy. After a brief stint as an animation designer for a handful of video games, Oum was hired as the lead animator (initially, the only one) for Rooster Teeth productions, the creators of Red Vs. Blue. Oum basically worked for the company in secret for about six months before they announced it in the most explosive way possible: a car literally exploded through a wall in the middle of an episode Red Vs. Blue, which was traditionally a machinima production. As someone who had already been familiar with Monty's work for several years, my mind was exploded all over the wall.
After directing a few seasons of Red Vs Blue, and with a growing staff of animators at Rooster Teeth, Monty eventually got to direct an original, 100% animated show, RWBY.
If you're wondering what all the fuss is about, you should probably just look up some of his work. The 'Red' trailer for RWBY is a good place to start, but basically, Monty was known for directing complex, absurd, and well choreographed fight sequences.
I had originally intended to actually record something myself at the end of this video, but quite frankly, I couldn't get through it. Monty Oum was only 33 when he died, and it really felt like he was only getting started. That's weird to say, since he'd gotten to do more than what most creators can dream of. He'd gotten to direct two seasons of his own show, based on his own concepts and character ideas. He was also just an absurdly nice guy. Despite the fact that I'd never met him, his death hit me really hard. RWBY had a lot of problems and it was (is) far from a perfect show, but damn if I didn't want to see what he was going to do next, both with RWBY and with whatever else he was working on in the back of his mind.
Anyway. The more I write the more I'm getting away from anything resembling a point, so I'm going to stop myself here. All I'll say is that I was quite literally incapable of actually recording some kind of message on the end of this video, so that should be a good indication of how much this has impacted me. He was, by all accounts, a great guy, and he'll be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Monty Oum.
