Did you ever wonder how different materials were discovered in the first place? Where did stainless steel come from? How about Teflon or vulcanized rubber? Artificial sweeteners like Saccharin or shape memory alloys like Nitinol?
In this video, I talk about the ways that we have discovered materials in the past. Whether through slow and inefficient Edisonian trial-and-error searches or through the pursuit of scientific curiosity, or just plain luck mankind has stumbled slowly onto new materials and the time is right for a radical new approach to materials discovery via materials informatics.
