The Time-Sequence System of the Imperial Observatory and the Symbolization of the Twelve Deities

Описание: Abstract: This paper aims to explain how the ancient Chinese Imperial Observatory (Qin Tianjian) constructed a precise temporal-symbolic system through astronomical observation. Its core lies in transforming natural cycles into human-usable structures, giving tangible form to otherwise invisible time.

1. Astronomical Foundation: Solar Motion and the Framework of Solar Terms
The astronomical basis of the Imperial Observatory system was not arbitrary star-watching, but rather the annual apparent motion of the Sun along the ecliptic. By measuring shadows and observing stars at dawn and dusk, they precisely defined the twenty-four solar terms, which formed the backbone of dynastic time management.

2. Derivation of the Deities: The Mathematical Cycle of the Twelve Gods
Using solar terms as a framework, the “Jian-Chu Twelve Deities” were derived—a purely mathematical cyclic sequence. Starting with the “Jian” day and following the sequence “Chu, Man, Ping, Ding, Zhi, Po, Wei, Cheng, Shou, Kai, Bi,” it repeats endlessly. This sequence is the algorithmic core of the system.

3. Cultural Embodiment: Star Names Coupled with the Concept of Duty Deities
To give this abstract algorithm cultural authority and communicability, the designers paired it with the existing star-official system. Six auspicious deities—Azure Dragon, Ming Tang, Jin Kui, Tian De, Yu Tang, Si Ming—and six inauspicious deities—Tian Xing, Vermilion Bird, White Tiger, Tian Lao, Xuan Wu, Gou Chen—were mapped onto specific days within the twelve-deity cycle.

4. From Natural Law to Human Ritual: Symbolic Translation
The “Twelve Duty Deities” were not based on worship of any particular star, but rather constituted a rigorously designed temporal-symbolic system. Its essence: by observing the Sun (nature), establishing solar terms and the twelve deities (law), and dressing them in star-official titles (culture), the ultimate goal of “governing human affairs according to celestial timing” was achieved.

Thus, my creation of the “Twelve Deities” is deeply grounded in this system: I did not invent them arbitrarily, but visually embodied the abstract “duty nodes” of this time-symbol system in a fully original way.

I am not “making up stories”; I am conducting a rigorous visual cultural-symbolization project
