Iran Parliament: ~8.2% women in parliament by 1978.
U.S. Congress: House ~4% women, and Senate women were few and just gaining ground around the same time.
Iran did make significant advances in women’s rights and political participation during the Pahlavi era (1925–1979), especially compared to earlier Iranian history. During the reign of Mohammad Reza Shah (especially after the White Revolution reforms of the 1960s and 1970s):
Iranian women gained the right to vote and run for office in 1963.
Laws such as the Family Protection Law raised women’s legal status in divorce, custody, marriage age, and polygamy restrictions.
Women could work as judges, professionals, and pursue higher education.
Parliamentary Representation
By the late 1970s (on the eve of the Revolution):
22 women were elected to the National Consultative Assembly (Majles) out of 268 total seats (≈ 8.2%).
2 women served in the Senate of Iran in that period.
Hundreds of women served on local councils (e.g., 333) — a noteworthy level of local civic participation.
👉 These figures were significant for the Middle East region at that time, and represented a major change compared to earlier Iranian history.
