Silkie Egg Incubation Instructions
Incubation Period: 20–21 days
Ideal Temperature: 99.5°F (37.5°C)
Ideal Humidity:
Days 1–18: 45–55%
Days 19–21 (Lockdown): 65–70%
Egg Turning: 3–5 times daily (stop at Day 18)
Detailed Steps:
Set Up Incubator:
Stabilize temp/humidity 24 hours before adding eggs.
Use a calibrated thermometer/hygrometer (Silkies are sensitive to fluctuations!).
Egg Selection & Storage:
Choose clean, uncracked eggs (≤7 days old).
Store pointy-end down at 55–60°F with 70% humidity until incubation.
Turning:
Turn eggs gently 3–5x/day to prevent embryo sticking. (This incubator has a built in turner)
Stop turning at Day 18 ("Lockdown").
Lockdown (Days 19–21):
Stop turning, raise humidity to 65–70%.
Do NOT open incubator! Let the chick hatch on its own!
Hatching:
Expect pips by Day 20–21. Resist helping! Silkies hatch slower than other breeds.
Keep chicks in incubator 24 hours post-hatch to dry.
Pro Tips for Silkies:
Extra Humidity: Their fluffy feathers mean parent-raised chicks need higher humidity, mimic this in incubation.
Patience: Silkies often hatch later than other chickens (up to Day 22).
Quarantine: Silkies are prone to broodiness. Use a broody hen if possible!
Troubleshooting:
Sticky Chick? Slightly raise humidity. This will help prevent the chick from getting stuck in the egg
No pip by Day 21? Wait 48 hours before assisting.
Good luck! Silkies are worth the extra care. 🐣💕
