I used the spin only option after doing some fleece blankets to ring them out a little bit more. This is in real time. To use this option, turn on the washer and touch and hold the spin selector button for 3 seconds. It doesn't matter what cycle the knob is set to. It gives you a 13 minute spin on high speed and 11 minutes on medium and low speed.
It is useful if you use one of the other cycles that have a really short final spin cycle such as the "Bedding" cycle that only spins for 4 minutes as an example. Sometimes you might want to spin the load again. It can also be useful if you spilled a bunch of water and soaked it up with towels or if maybe you got drenched in a rain storm so you can ring them out really well.
Remember, it is cheaper to run an extra spin on the washer than it is to run a longer drying cycle in the dryer. Especially if you have an electric dryer.
