In the late 1940s, one of the most extraordinary custom cars ever built appeared in America — the Norman Timbs Special. Long, impossibly smooth, and dramatically low, it looked more like a futuristic land-speed machine than a road car. What made the story even more incredible was that this radical vehicle wasn’t built by a major manufacturer, but by a single engineer: Norman E. Timbs.

Inspired by the aerodynamic “streamliner” philosophy that shaped airplanes and locomotives of the era, Timbs created a lightweight tubular chassis and covered it with a fully hand-formed aluminum body. Every curve was sculpted by hand, forming a dramatic teardrop silhouette designed to slice through the air.

Hidden beneath the long tail was a powerful Buick Straight‑Eight, producing about 180 horsepower — impressive performance for a handmade car in the late 1940s. Thanks to its aerodynamic body and rear-engine layout, the Timbs Special could reportedly reach speeds close to 120 mph.

When the car was revealed, it stunned the automotive world. Magazines featured it, enthusiasts admired it, and many people couldn’t believe such an advanced machine had been built outside a factory.

But the story took a tragic turn. Decades later, the original car was destroyed in a fire during the 1960s. For many years, the legendary streamliner existed only in photographs and memories.
