A master's degree is a graduate degree that you'd earn to gain mastery in a particular subject – whether that be for personal fulfillment, to help you advance in your current career, or to start a new one. Regardless of your end goal, you’re likely wondering how long it will take to get there.

The answer is different for everyone. Typically, getting a master’s degree can take about two years from start to finish. In some cases, you can earn your degree in less time, and in others, the timeline may be extended to meet your individual scheduling needs or to meet specific program requirements.  
   
It comes down to how many credits you need to complete for your chosen program, including any graduate transfer credits you may have, and how many courses you choose to take at a time.

Most classes are worth 3 credits. Bachelor's degrees are typically 120 credits, or about 40 courses, making them 4-year degrees. Master's programs can range from 30-60 credits, or 10-20 courses.

Programs that are closer to 30 credits could take you just over a year to complete if you’re going to school full-time. At SNHU online, full-time means two courses per 10-week term. While a master’s program that is 60 credits may take closer to two years going full-time.
