Walk in Nikaia "Germanika" refugee neighbourhood in Piraeus, Greece

Описание: A walk at Nikaia and the small neighbourhood of "Germanika". Built as war reparations and housed refugees from Mikra Asia (1922 & onwards refugees).

Below Krini Square, in Nikaia, there is a neighbourhood with small houses known as "the German" in Greek "Γερμανικά". These are ground floor shacks - houses, with a pitched tiled roof, built by the Germans as part of the German compensation to our country from the First World War and placed in various refugee settlements, because they coincided with the arrival of refugees in 1922.

"Germanika" was one of the types of houses with which the Greek state housed the refugees of the Asia Minor catastrophe. Due to their history, the Municipality of Nikaia Ag. Ioannis Renti characterises them as "structural culture" of the area.

The "Germanika" had an area of ​​50sqm, and housed large families. They relied on piles to create a basement, and later, when needs increased, the basements were converted into a room and a kitchen, usually inhabited by parents, who gave dowry to the German shack to their daughters. Many of these houses are still standing today, as you can see from this video.
