Gold looks simple—yellow, shiny, obvious. But in the field, color can lie. Wetness, glare, iron staining, and natural alloy mix (often gold + silver) can make real gold look “too rich,” or make non-gold flash like treasure.
In this video I explain gold purity in a practical, scientific way—without hype—and show what I personally look for so I don’t get fooled by appearance.
What you’ll learn:
What “purity” actually means (karat explained in plain language)
Why natural placer gold is rarely 24k (and what electrum is)
The biggest reasons color changes: lighting, wet vs dry, coatings/stains, particle shape
Field-safe checks to reduce mistakes (what they CAN and CAN’T prove)
When you should stop guessing and use proper testing later
✅ ACTION FOR YOU (try this next trip):
Do a shade test (sun → shade → sun) and watch stability of color
Do a wet vs dry check (dry it, then re-wet it)
Confirm with behavior in the pan (settle / tap / tilt) before believing the “yellow”
💬 Comment what you found:
Bright yellow / pale yellow / orange-toned — and how it behaved when you tapped and tilted. I’ll tell you what I think it is and what to test next.
