Desensitizing your dog to sounds is a process of repeatedly playing trigger sounds starting at a low volume and gradually increasing the volume over a period of weeks or months until your dog shows no signs of fear or aggravation.
The goal is to gradually expose your dog to sounds in a safe and controlled environment. If your dog reacts to the sound, you are progressing too quickly. Lower the sound and continue playing it.
A helpful way to associate the sound with positive experiences is to play it starting at a low volume while your dog is distracted with their meal or during playtime. You can also play the sounds while going about your normal day with your dog listening but occasional reassurance is acceptable.
Reassuring your dog all the time while the sounds are playing is not recommended because doing that encourages the fearful behaviour and teaches them it gets rewarded.
