Piston rod load – Principle and calculation
Major damages on compressors based rod load
For this reason engineers must understand the loads while selecting/using a reciprocating compressor
Mass forces / Inertia forces
Inertia force is the force resulting from the acceleration of the reciprocating mass
Force from the motor, through the crankshaft to the connection rod will move the crosshead/piston/piston rod
Gas load
At the beginning of a revolution high pressure is in HE and low pressure in CE
In TDC the high pressure on HE is “supporting” the piston to move to TDC until it decrease
But CE pressure will increase and works “against” piston when it increase
Vise versa it happens after BDC
The resulting force is a combination of HE and CE pressure
Combines loads
Fcombined = F gas load + F inertia
