The Beatles’ third album ends on a rather soft note unlike the rocking finales of the previous albums. “I’ll Be Back” was written by John Lennon with help from Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon/McCartney like usual. The song’s chord sequence was a reworking of the chord progression from Del Shannon’s 1961 UK hit “Runaway”. The song alternates between major and minor keys and is 4/4 time aside except for a few measures that switch to 2/4 time. The song was released as the 13th and final track to the UK release of A Hard Day’s Night on July 10, 1964 but was released in North American on Beatles ‘65 later in December.
The song was recorded in 16 takes on June 1, 1964 along with “I’ll Cry Instead”, “Matchbox”, and “Slow Down.” Nine of these takes were for the rhythm track while the last seven were for vocal and an acoustic guitar overdub. Takes two and three were later released on Anthology 1 in 1995 with take two being played in 6/8 time unlike take 3 which was performed in 4/4 just like the final version.
There’s nothing much to Ringo’s drum part. It’s what you’d expect from A Hard Day’s Night. It’s a steady going, closed hi hat groove with a steady bass drum pattern. I guess the only interesting thing about this drum track is the open hi hat hit in the very beginning of the song. Aside from that, it's pretty simple, but that is ok.
Only five songs left from A Hard Day’s Night. Maybe I’ll knock those last five covers out and have another album entirely covered but I don’t know. They don’t have the most exciting drum parts but some have aux percussion that would make them a little more exciting. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy!
