At the Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University Trauma Center, we are proud to partner with EMS in the area to deliver quality care and save lives. For more information about the trauma center at Barnes-Jewish, visit: http://www.barnesjewish.org/trauma.
Each year, we host an EMS Appreciation Day, along with St. Louis Children's Hospital. We wish we could honor EMS for all they that do year round, every day.
This year, we started off the day at 5 in the morning making pancakes in the Barnes-Jewish Hospital ambulance bay. We had lunch available from 11 -- 2 and then we rounded off the evening for night shift with a nacho bar from 8 -- 11. All attendees received a trunk organizer.
Learn more about our critical partnership with EMS:
Heather Heil , Injury Prevention Outreach Coordinator, Barnes-Jewish Hospital Trauma Services: Whenever patients come here they're at their worst, and we want Time Critical Diagnosis available for every person. So therefore we work with our EMS providers and this is a great chance for us to say thank you and to work with them to make sure the state of Missouri does well.
Douglas Schuerer, MD, Washington University trauma surgeon & director of trauma at Barnes-Jewish Hospital:
We really need people to call 911, and once they do that, EMS can respond and start interventions there, whether it's IVs or giving a patient a breathing tube or performing CPR, they're trained to do all that, and they can really make sure the patient gets to our hospital alive so we can continue the work they started to keep that patient alive.
David K. Tan, MD, EMS section chief at Washington University & Barnes-Jewish Hospital:
There are certainly advantages to having the appropriate care in the field. And when they bring them to us here at Barnes-Jewish Hospital-- a level I trauma center, we simply are able to provide the best possible care for that time critical diagnosis that the patient has. Of course, it all starts with the EMT and the paramedic in the field recognizing that time critical diagnosis and emergency, and bringing them to us in a timely fashion.
Thank you EMS for your continued partnership!
