from Jackson Brothers - A New Season (1972)

I was listening to Just A Man and thinking how much the harmonies of this gentle 12-string guitar acoustic trio reminded me of Rising Hope. That’s when I noticed that Mike Goldberg was a member of both groups. The Jackson Brothers pretty much stick with the pure folk style, mixing originals with standards like ‘Jesus Loves Me’, ‘He’s Everything To Me’, ‘Get Together’, ‘His Sheep Am 1’, ‘Master Designer’, ‘If I Had My Way’, ‘Wish We’d All Been Ready’, etc. Just A Man has plenty of admirable moments, more than you’d expect from a two-guitars-and-a bass outfit. A New Season has a wonderful jangly serenity and charm to it, ofien recalling Rising Hope’s quieter side. The guitar work is more involved and several songs are graced with violin accompaniment. Reduced to a duo and minus Goldberg, Nobody Cared and Sing Somebody don’t have quite the same appeal, though both still manage to entertain. (The Archivist, 4th Edition by Ken Scott, page 124)
