This is an updated version of an Old song I found in The National Songbook. It's origins are disputed, some claiming it is an American Song, others Irish and of course English. The reference here to London Town is of course changed to other towns in other versions. The original Jovial tune seems inappropriate for such a serious topic of sinking ships but there are many examples of this in Folk Lore. I have re-harmonised and changed the original melody slightly to bring in a little mood change by adding in a few minor chords. The Jovial Tune of ''They built the ship Titanic'' was of course intended to portray an element of sarcasm but The Mermaid had no reason to do that considering the story is completely true.
In Ships Folk Lore seeing a Mermaid was a sign of doom for the ship so in this case the sinking was inevitable. Pity they didn't have web cams in those days or we could have had a sighting of a Mermaid or even a rescue operation. How times have changed.
