South Africa introduced stricter immigration policies 18 years ago which controlled the movement of travellers between Lesotho and South Africa. This was because of porous borders and the inadequate safety features of the Lesotho passport which posed a security risk.
Thousands of Basotho were then declared persona non grata or undesirable immigrants. The strain sparked heated debate questioning the existence of the colonial borders between the two countries.
